What is GBY.DEV?

Social media is a fine place to visit, but not a great place to live, and I needed a new home for my opinions, ideas, and work. gby.dev is that home.

Why not put this on social media or other blog platforms?

It feels like social media and blog platforms have all become giant ad machines, more or less. Even if I, the content creator, wishes for my content to be available without ads, many platforms reserve the right to put ads in front of viewers / readers anyway. If someone finds my content interesting, I would like to avoid subjecting them to ads or other distractions if reasonable.

Ultimately, if I can’t afford to give something away for free, I’ll do my best to charge a fair price for it. Having users go to a social media / ad platform as the only way to get to a piece of information might no longer be a “fair price” for many.

Finally, I can also host whatever I want here. Images, audio, video, CAD files, whatever. I like having one place to share everything instead of having to ask people to sign into 5 different platforms. If you’ve given me a slice of your time, I don’t want to waste it if there is an obvious-to-me way to avoid it.

FAQs

Why do I have to have a GitHub account to comment?

GitHub was chosen for a few reasons:

  • I’m already using it everyday for work and other projects, so moderating discussions will be lower effort for me… in theory.
  • Many of the people I collaborate with already have a GitHub account
  • GitHub is free to sign up for and use

Also, I’ve come to value more transparency in online discussions and a lot of GitHub users tend to use their real identity.

I understand that this comes at the cost of some additional effort for people that don’t use GitHub, but it seems to be that way for almost any comment system I could implement.

Why is it called GBY?

That’s a secret for the readers to figure out. Have fun!
